Jacobs, N. J. (American Meat Institute Foundation, Chicago, Ill.), J. Johantges, and R. H. Deibel. Effect of anaerobic growth on nitrate reduction by Staphylococcus epidermidis. J. Bacteriol. 85:782-787. 1963.-In anaerobic cultures, a strain of Staphylococcus epidermidis failed to reduce nitrate, although nitrate was reduced in stationary cultures grown in the presence of air. Resting suspensions of cells grown in air reduced nitrate. Although suspensions of cells grown anaerobically did not reduce nitrate, the nitrate reductase enzyme was shown to be present. When the artificial electron carrier, benzyl viologen, was added to suspensions of cells grown anaerobically, nitrate was reduced, indicating that an electron carrier required for nitrate reduction was missing. The addition of hemin to the growth medium enabled anaerobic cultures to reduce nitrate.

Staphylococcus epidermidis: metabolic adaptation and biofilm formation in response to different oxygen concentrations.
Staphylococcus epidermidis has become a major health hazard. It is necessary to study its metabolism and hopefully uncover therapeutic targets. Cultivating S. epidermidis at increasing oxygen concentration [O2] enhanced growth, while inhibiting biofilm formation. Respiratory oxidoreductases were differentially expressed, probably to prevent reactive oxygen species formation. Under aerobiosis, S...
متن کاملAnaerobic conditions induce expression of polysaccharide intercellular adhesin in Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis.
Products of the intercellular adhesion (ica) operon in Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis synthesize a linear beta-1,6-linked glucosaminylglycan. This extracellular polysaccharide mediates bacterial cell-cell adhesion and is required for biofilm formation, which is thought to increase the virulence of both pathogens in association with prosthetic biomedical implants. The envir...
متن کاملEffect of oxygen on heme and porphyrin accumulation from delta-aminolevulinic acid by suspensions of anaerobically grown Staphylococcus epidermidis.
The effect of various conditions on the accumulation of porphyrins and heme by resting suspensions of anaerobically grown cells of Staphylococcus epidermidis was examined. Anaerobically grown cells contain 10 to 15% of the amount of protoheme found in cells grown aerobically. Resting suspensions of anaerobically grown cells, when incubated aerobically in buffer with delta-aminolevulinic acid an...
متن کاملThe Effect of Biosurfactant of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae on Biofilms Produced by Staphylococcus Aureus, Epidermidis and Saprophyticus: A Laboratory Study
Background and Objectives: Biosurfactants are amphiphilic molecules produced by microorganisms that due to surfactant activity, have several applications in different industries such as cleaning, emulsification, foaming and dispersion. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of biosurfactant extracted from saccharomycess cerevisiae on biofilm formation of staphylococcus aureus (PTC...
متن کاملIsolation of a strictly anaerobic strain of Staphylococcus epidermidis.
Staphylococcus epidermidis is a well-characterized, nonfastidious, aerobic gram-positive coccus commonly isolated in the clinical microbiology laboratory. Although coagulase-negative staphylococci, including Staphylococcus epidermidis, are often considered a contaminant in the clinical laboratory, an increasing number of reports describe their pathogenesis, in particular in infections of prosth...
